02 | For Our Patients and Teammates
Get the Terms Right:
What is HIPAA?
What is PHI?
The Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a
federal law that protects patient
privacy and controls how
Protected Health Information (PHI)
is used and shared. HIPAA requires
healthcare providers, like Ivy, to
keep patient information
confidential and secure. Violations
can result in serious financial and
legal consequences.
Protected Health Information (PHI)
is any information that can be used
to identify a patient and relates to
their health, treatment, or payment
for healthcare services. PHI can be
found in many places, including
insurance details and medical
records. PHI is more than a medical
diagnosis. Refer to our friendly
resources on the intranet for more
information.
What is PII?
Personally Identifiable Information
(PII) is information that can be used
to identify an individual. Examples
include names, Social Security
numbers, credit card numbers,
birthdates, and email addresses.
One Ivy
By safeguarding personal information, we honor the trust and confidence our teammates and patients place in us. This is a critical part of
what makes Ivy the provider, partner, and employer of choice in outpatient rehabilitation. We handle every entry, record, and conversation
with care — not only because it is the law, but because we’re committed to treating every teammate and patient with the respect they
deserve. You would want the same level of care when it comes to your information.
